課程概述

This course is divided into two parts, corresponding to two semesters. In the first part – the fall semester, we will examine and study a variety of topics in the tradition of western philosophy. Thus, the first part of the course can be thought of as an introduction to the core, or some central issues in metaphysics, including the problem of universals, the concept of existence, identity, modality, persistence, composition, time, etc. In the second part of the course, we will examine the contemporary debates related to the aforementioned issues, especially the debates between realism and antirealism.

課程要求
Weekly assignment: Each week, there is an article in the selected texts (for the details, see the description in the Content), to be assigned to the student as weekly assignment. The student is asked to read and write a summary. The main point for the required summary is to “make precise” a main argument in the reading, and then try your best to criticize it or evaluate it, if you have any. (Length: preferably 1-3 pages single space, or 300-1000 words).
Mid-term short essay: The student should give a quick summary of the assigned reading and some related further readings, if there are any, and then present a focused critical response to some particular aspect of it. (Length: preferably, 5-8 pages, double space, or 1500-2500 words)
Final paper (end-of-term paper): Due by the end of semester. The main purpose of the final paper is to provide an orientation on a certain question in metaphysics, showing a sense of the field and the status of current debates, and equally importantly to make some original contribution to the advancement of the relevant debates. (Length: preferably 8-13 pages, double space, maximum: 4000 words.)
